Who was....

1) The first Duke of St Albans (c 1680)?
2) The only man on either side who could lose the War in an afternoon?
3) Owner of a chain of model shops? Or is coffee preferable to other hot beverages?
4) Hairoun (‘Land of the Blessed’), or the patron of Valencia, vinters and brickmakers?
5) Famously banned from the Bluewater shopping centre, but more popular at Universities.
6) Perhaps Father Christmas to Tom Cruise’s ex?
7) Duck! Oh no. He’s male!
8) Perhaps another duck (1986), or perhaps a comment of surprise at the level of force in a semi cockney?
9) The villain of Much Ado about Nothing. Or perhaps a castle component?
10) Originally synonymous with cake, but asked to be renamed (transliterated?), in order to sound more British.

And what links them?

6) Well, Nicole Kidman did have a Christmas hit with Robbie Williams, and there was a notable Admiral Hugh Williams RN involved in missions to Turkey just before the first world war, but that's definitely a bit obscure.

And, becoming even more obscure

3) Rea Admiral Ralph Christie, USN, commanded a submarine flotilla in the Phillipines in WWII. Christies is the model shop in St. Andrews and I could imagine someone faced with a cup of something other than coffee exclaiming "Christ! Tea?" in dismay.

No idea otherwise. :)

Admiral Beattie is the man you're missing.

Although I think Beatties (the model shop chain) is no more. It's probably for the best, given that in their last years they stopped stocking the grassroots stuff.

Yes indeed.

Admiral of the Fleet Earl Beatty. You will (I hope) forgive the spelling pun ;)

Still outstanding

1) The first Duke of St Albans (c 1680)?
6) Perhaps Father Christmas to Tom Cruise’s ex?

I expect Sharikkamur in particular to get (1) after a previous KWQ :)

*Groans, bends bouble and groans some more as she realises she's been thinking about the wrong line...*

1) Nelson - the 1st Duke of St. Albans was the son of Charles I and Nell Gwynne. Grr....

Still working on 6.

I thought you'd get it from that reminder ;)

Yes. It was Nel(l's )son ;)

Let me know when you want more clues as to the other one :)

No, to both, but that's getting quite interesting.

For 6, might I point you to the ex in question being Penelope Cruz.
