Who or what….?

1) Was the wife of the King who was 5’6” at the beginning of his reign, and only 4’8” at its end?
2) Is named (in translation) ‘The Father of Waters’?
3) Was the father of Farmer George?
4) Was technically supported by a lion and dragon, but preferred a Pelican?
5) Enlarged his fathers hunting lodge, and moved his court there, but didn’t hang around long enough to attend the treaty?
6) Was the capital of Erik Bloodaxe, until he was driven from it?
7) Was the home of the original Colossus?
8) Was born in 1732, and attained the command of the Virginia Militia in the British wars with the French?
9) Raised the standard in Nottingham, and then went to Warwickshire in time for October 23rd, 1642
10) Was arrested for complicity in the Earl of Essex’s rebellion, but still went on to be Governor of Virginia. Is he related to a _different_ Sussex pavilion?

And what links them?

I'd have thought that they were referring to the District of Columbia, hence Washington D.C. in no. 8 Most of the other of the states other than Louisiana and Mississippis are Colonial States-(13 Colonies) just missing a few such as New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. Either that or just the "Eastern Seaboard" states... Very good witticisms, Frodo.

Where do you find the time to make these quizzes? I'd like to make one up on Shakespeare, but don't have His plays here with me. Any suggestions?
