The son of one of the consultants at my hospital is trying to decide between St Andrews and Sheffield for medschool. I've been able to talk about St Andrews, but obviously can't about sheffield.

So.... can any Bladeish type people who're able to talk about Sheffield Uni or Sheffield as a City post commentary here, so I can pass it on?

Sheffield's a lovely place to live although I dont know anything about the med school. The city centre has just been done up and looks great and although it's not huge Medowhall is a tram ride away which has everything the city center dosn't. There is a good live music scene with conventional modern stuff at the leadmill and some slightly outside the box stuff going on at the boardwalk, the folk music scene is great, lots of live stuff, lots of informal sessions.

The bus and tram networks are good although the trams arn't particularly useful unless you live in a specific part of town. The bus network runs into the peak district and it's really really easy to get into the countryside. Large walking/climbing outdoor community.

Lots of parks and public green space, the best part of town that's student-y from this perspective is Hunters Bar - lots of nice shops and bars along Ecelsawl road here, and a tescos and things.

Theater is good, the crucible usually has excellent stuff on, a combination of modern and traditional work, and good student discount.

Sheffield has no airport but the link to Manchester is about an hour and a half on the train. Train services are frequent and direct to London and Edinburgh as it's on that line.

I'd really recommend it as a place to live, let me know if you want any specific questions answered.
