How frustrating.

I went to my registrar interview in Northampton yesterday. As you'll recall, I'd worried about the cash side of things, since it was (very vaguely) advertised as an 8-5 job (ie, no out of hours cash suppliment). But when I visited back on Monday the Consultant raised the prospect of me doing part of the SHO general surgery on-call to make up the cash. Fine, not ideal, but fine.

Okay, so, I go to the interview. I do well. Very well. They offer me the job. No out-of-hours. No suppliment. 15k pay cut. Which is just not affordable.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHH!!

I had to turn down a Registrar job! :(

Did you call the Consultant on this, before you turned it down? :-(

I queried it. He said, 'Sorry. We couldn't arrange it'.

I'm sorry to hear this.

Is your surgical training so differrent from the medical route that you could'nt Locum for a Physician instead to make up the income?

Erm, let me put it like this.....

The last time I did general medicine was last millenium.

Is that a legal impediment, or are you merely concerned that your skills are too rusty. (Obviously I realise that if you're concerend your skills are lacking it would probably be unethical to practice in that area)

How about arranging SHO general surgery on-call (or similar) in a different but adjacent hospital?

None of 'em really practical.

And to be honest, general medicine? Ewwwww!

Umm, forgive my ignorance but if a registrar (whatever that means) job will pay less that what you currently do, then why is it so important?

Registrar is more authority, more respect, better job prospects.
It's sort of like the difference between being an Office Administrator and an Office Manager - they do pretty much the same job, but one looks a hell of a lot more impressive on a resume. And - usually - one pays more.

Sorry to hear about that, petal. At least you can say you were offered the position and chose to turn it down. I hope next time you get an offe you deserve!

Thanks. It's SO bloody annoying tho'! It was heartbreaking to sit there, with them offering me the job, and both them and me knowing I'd have to turn it down!

Sorry to hear it...

Damn. Is this likely to be the course of things? Do registrars less commonly do on-call? Hope not - it would make the prospect VERY difficult!
