Mutter grumble
Jun. 10th, 2004 10:46 amI don't know- maybe I'm getting into a rut, but work is irritating this week. In part it has to do with a lack of (consultant supervised) general anaesthetic operating, and almost half the week spent doing local anaesthetic minor ops lists, which are of limited educational input. It's particularly annoying, as I haven't been scheduled for main list operating now for 6 weeks, and that was a time when they were down a Registrar, so could have got me in to make up the numbers. Ho hum. Can't be helped, but I'm hoping things will improve, because the bigger, newer ops are the ones I need to be doing. At least I got an unexpected Perth GA operating list on Monday, with enough time for me to do a new operation, with the boss talking me through it. That was _fun_, and it's very much the sort of thing I need to be doing at this point in my career.
Movement on the papers front- two got declined from Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and British Journal of Plastic Surgery, so I'm redrafting them for BJPS and another journal respectively- waiting on the Consultant I'm working with on the second paper giving his preferances as to which. Also waiting on the East Grinstead crew deciding if they want to go ahead with a paper I planned almost a year ago down there, and which they've stalled by ignoring. And fired an e-mail off to BJPS asking if they want one of my MSc essays as a review article- my tutor reckoned it was publishable, so hopefully *crosses fingers*. I went up to General Surgery Dpt yesterday, to ask them if they had any photos I could use for it. The consultant (I used to work for up there) didn't, but he said he had a few suitable cases on his waiting list, and would (get this!) rearrange his lists to bring them in sooner, so we could get some photos!! I love knowing everyone at this hospital!
The reason behind all this activity is that I had my annual appraisal, where they said, basically, "You need more publications. The only thing that kept you off the short list for the Dundee Registrar job was that you hadn't published enough." Which is fair enough. I need another couple or three papers in the next year, I think. So..... apply myself, I guess. No new paper ideas at present, unfortunately, but doubtless something will come up.
