The pain, the pain....
Oct. 2nd, 2006 08:47 amThe weekend was fabulous- Rent-a-Don, at Shurdington (an SCA rapier event, for those not in the know). Sadly a low attendance (like about 20 people), but the plus side of that was only 12 students, so lots of Don time.
And very interesting stuff it was too- a lot of biomechanics, which whilst not period does explain why the period stuff works, and then into a total rebuild of my guard, thrust and lunge into the style of Giganti (admittedly with somewhat limited effect- I've been doing it the current way for 15 years now, and some habits are a tad hard to break!)
Then various guards, counters etc of Giganti for a total of 7 hours on Saturday and 3 on Sunday.
Fascinating, fascinating stuff, even if some of it, such as 'constraining in 2nd and 3rd' (essentially laying your sword diagonally over your opponents, leaving his tip still initially on line for your face) is incredibly counter-intuitive.
The down side? I hurt. A lot. Because of the change in guards/motion etc, whilst I wasn't tired at the time, my left quads, sartorius, gracillis, and lat dorsi are all telling me how much they dislike Giganti.
I, on the other hand, do like Giganti, but lacking his text, will be taking another look at Fabris!

Date: 2006-10-02 07:51 pm (UTC)Now _this_ is where Double Wars really scores. We need a damn sauna at our events! We wouldn't hurt so much!
