... for me to become a migrant in search of work again. Or, to put it another way, looking for a job as my contract nears its end.

I can't help feeling it's getting harder. This time last year, I was regularly getting shortlisted for registrar interviews. Just rang Newcastle, and wasn't shortlisted for their Reg posts. So... bit depressed about that, since it means I wasn't even in the top 12 candidates. :(

In travel news, it's interview time for SHO jobs....
Newcastle yesterday
North London tomorrow (Wexham Park)
Then fly up to Scotland for the weekend to see Richard
Then fly back down Sunday night
North London interview Monday (Mount Vernon)
Then back to Swansea until Friday, when I have ANOTHER interview in North London, this time for the RAFT fellowship (a research job with on-calls tacked on, basically). I expect that one to be a rough interview, especially as I'm far from convinced it's in my best interests to be doing an MD, since I'm already post of the way through an MSc, and it'd label me as an incurable academic!

But it _is_ a job.

Ho hum.

Good luck with it all. You're way too qualified to *not* get something decent soon...

"and it'd label me as an incurable academic!" - I'm afraid it's probably genetic.

Tough luck with the interview Tom- sorry we missed you (Jamie was quietly hoping you'd get the Newcastle job so he'd have someone to play roleplaying games with!).

Good luck with the London interviews. We'll keep our fingers crossed.

Good luck! So do these contracts usually just last a year?

No no.... I haven't heard yet about the Newcastle SHO. This was the Newcastle LAT job...

Yeah. It's viewed as an efficient way to keep junior medical staff desperate and hungry for promotion...

..or to make us burn out and move to less popular specialties.

OH RIGHT. I dunno about these things.

Do let us know when you hear anything.

Seems crazy to me ;/ (Not to mention stressful.)

A year is barely enough to be able to remember everyone else's name and face ... I never realised it got like that.

Yeah. And it's getting worse, since the colleges, as the system is changing next year, are encouraging everyone to get a registrar job, regardless of whether they'd rather be off doing a couple of years lab research...

If you need a place to crash in London...

let us know - you're welcome chez nous in Hackney.

I wouldn't mind if you and your lady ended up in N. London - it would give us more folks to play with, and someone new for Sebastian to fence with.

Good luck! It seems so crazy that someone with your training and experience isn't snatched up! It must happen soon!

Thanks. Tonight, at least, I'm crashing with Kevin and Mary and driving over at 'oh my God' o'clock in the am...

Either that, or I need to start thinking about other specialties, like Radiology or something. :(

...considering the cheapness of flights to London from Dusseldorf, the fact that the sister in law is attending College somewhere in South Essex (Chelmsford or something like that) and what not, I'd actually be delighted to have you just 1 1/2 hrs away from me and giving Mel and me FINALLY an excuse to hop across the channel to the former island known as Britain.... That is if we still are allowed to cross the border considering the World Cup...

Best of luck. What's wrong with being an incurable academic? :)

Don't know about your line of surgery per se, but Australia is importing doctors, espesh surgeons, as fast as they can at the moment, especially ones who are prepared to work in rural cities (i.e. not the state capitals)

Coooooooome to us, you know you want to!

Well, the problem is, if I become

'Hobbitomm, MRCS (Ed), MD, MSc, MB ChB, BSc' is that non-academic units are going to look at me very cautiously, on the (mistaken) grounds that academically experienced surgeons aren't any good at cutting...
