hobbitommOnce again, I'm hugely impressed with my polymath friends. Just one not got (6)
Who was....
1) The first Duke of St Albans (c 1680)?
Son of Charles and Nell Gwyn. So, that'd be (Admiral Vicount) Nel(l's )son
2) The only man on either side who could lose the War in an afternoon?
Sir John Jellicoe. Admiral in the 14-18 war, and as such responsible for keeping the German fleet pinned in the north sea. If they got out, British trade would have been devastated, and potentially the country knocked out of the war.
3) Owner of a chain of model shops? Or is coffee preferable to other hot beverages?
Sir David Beatty (Beat Tea). Jellicoe's deputy at Jutland, and his successor as both commander of the Grand Fleet, and as 1st Sea Lord.
4) Hairoun (‘Land of the Blessed’), or the patron of Valencia, vinters and brickmakers?
(Earl) St Vincent
5) Famously banned from the Bluewater shopping centre, but more popular at Universities.
That'd be any of the number of Admiral Hood (ies) ;)
6) Perhaps Father Christmas to Tom Cruise’s ex?
(The Marquis of) Santa Cruz ;). Spanish 16th century admiral, of whom it was said that even Christ was not safe, for if he chose, the Marquis could sail to paradise in order to crucify him again.
7) Duck! Oh no. He’s male!
That'd be (Sir Francis) Drake, English Vice Admiral in the Armada Campaign
8) Perhaps another duck (1986), or perhaps a comment of surprise at the level of force in a semi cockney?

Don John (Of Austria). Spanish/Hapsburg admiral, commander of the Holy League fleet at the battle of Lepanto, 1571
10) Originally synonymous with cake, but asked to be renamed (transliterated?), in order to sound more British.
Either of the Lords Battenberg, obliged to anglicise their name to Mountbatten during WW1, to sound less German.
